Australian Standard Certified

ANL is certified to 3 Australian Standards relevant to bulk landscape and horticultural materials supply.

Commonly, materials supply specifications in project documentation requests products to be certified under more than one Australian Standard. This is not achievable and should be avoided.

Each standard specifies specific attributes relevant to specific product uses or applications. As such each standard should cater for most necessary applications.

Where there is a preference for particular attributes to be tested using methodologies sourced from multiple standards, then this must be clearly identified and documented.

NB: Not all specific applications are covered by an Australian Standard. For example, AS4419 does not contain a sub-planter category nor specify details and parameters of relevance for a B-horizon on-slab soil mix. In such instances, we have determined the most relevant and important parameters we believe apply to the particular application.

1. AS4419 – Soils for Landscape and Garden Use

When specifying products certified to AS4419, it is critical that the specific product category is included in the specification as the product formulations and key characteristics are specific to the product use and application.

AS4419-2003 Organic Soil

Certified products

  • Greenlife® Garden Mix
Products certified to the ‘Organic Soil” category are general purpose garden mixes for on-grade application, with a bulk density >0.6kg/l and include 15-25% organic matter by mass.

AS4419-2003 Low Density Soil

Certified products

  • Greenlife® Lightweight Garden Mix
Products certified to the ‘Low Density Soil” category are for use on an artificial base material such as rooftops and large planter boxes on-slab. These products are required to have a bulk density of 0.3-0.6kg/l and include 10-40% organic matter by mass.
These are dedicated lightweight mixes and particular consideration must be given to the relevant organic matter in the product and its installation depth. Recommended maximum installation depth for Greenlife® Lightweight Garden Mix as an A-horizon on-slab product is 400mm. Where greater depth is required, a B-horizon Sub-planter mix is recommended.

2. AS4454 – Composts, Soil Conditioner and Mulches - 2012 (Lic no. 1988)

There are several categories covering both soil conditioners and mulches in this standard and is important that the specific product category required is detailed in the project specification.

NB: Not all soil conditioner products supplied to landscape projects are composted. Many are pasteurised and are of poor quality. To ensure that specified products are composted, include the requirement that the product as a minimum the product is specified as a certified “Composted Product”.

Specifiers must also ascertain the status of mulch products before specifying ASS4454 certified products in documentation. Many long standing and commonly used landscape mulches are not AS certified and where this is a prerequisite for supply, it is very often the case that no AS4454 certified option exists in the marketplace from any supplier.

AS4454-2012 Composted Product

Certified products

  • Greenlife® Mulch & Compost
  • Cow & Compost™

AS4454-2012 Raw Mulch

Certified products

  • Fine Raw Mulch - Forest Fines®
  • Coarse Raw Mulch - Forest Blend®

These two mulch products are certified under the “Raw Mulch” category in the standard and fall into either the Fine Mulch or Coarse Mulch grade category as noted above.

3. AS3743 – Potting Mixes - 2003 (Lic no. 1382)

It is relatively uncommon that AS3743 certified products are specified in landscape specifications, although this standard is often referenced.

AS3743-2003 Regular Potting Mix

Certified products

  • ANLR106 – Regular

AS3743-2003 Premium Potting Mix

Certified products

  • ANLP013 - Premium

NB: Whilst these mixes meet the physical and nutritional requirements of many species, they will not meet the requirements of all. Prior to specifying particular mixes we recommend that you ask for technical support on technicalsupport@anlscape.com.au and discuss details of the species specified in the particular project planting schedule.
