Structural Soil is an engineered subgrade media designed to support pavements whilst providing sufficient pore space for long term tree root development beneath pavement.

This product has two primary applications;

  • Structural sub-grade supporting engineering loads of pathways or roadways.
  • Structural backfill in street tree plantings

Part C: Handling & Installation

General: Structural Soil functions as a structurally sound sub-pavement support that provides a practical porosity allowing plant root development without impacting upon the supported pavement.

Transportation: As a blend of large aggregate & filler soil, the product is supplied moist to minimize particle separation during transport. Structural Soil should be installed immediately upon delivery where possible.

Installation: Should delays occur necessitating stockpiling, it is important that it be remixed with additional moisture prior to use, should the product dry due to the delay in installation.

Structural Soil should be installed in 150mm layers. Each layer requires compaction at or above 95% maximum density. It is essential that non-vibrating rollers are used for compaction as vibrating plates or rollers will cause particle separation & potentially impact upon sub-soil drainage systems.

Tree Planting: Trees may be installed using a range of methods however irrespective of the method of installation it is important that the compacted integrity of the Structural Soil is maintained.

Site situations may necessitate that large scale trees be placed prior to the surrounding Structural Soil & surface pavement. In this instance the Structural Soil is to be installed as detailed above, with care taken when compacting adjacent to the root-ball. To assist in the creation of a graded interface between the root-ball and the Structural Soil, a 100mm layer of 80:20 Sand Soil is to be built up surrounding the root-ball.

Should tree planting be programmed to occur following the installation of the Structural Soil, tree pits can be framed to the required size & backfilled with 80:20 Sand Soil prior to the installation & compaction of the Structural Soil.
